No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
