Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
