Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Group

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in strength within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The latest chapter finished on a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of characters who will split off from the primary party to begin their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the start that having everyone at a single group would be impossible.

This explains, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where non-violent answers are rare.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear unsuited, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, invading the secret base, attacking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then paid off his liabilities and fled to a secure base in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd close behind.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each adventurer has a individual motive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, wants revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the region and warns that it is a nasty place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could help the group reach locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the powers that rule the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The target is marked for death by the clan.

This means them little choice but to head to the remote area in pursuit of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s follow-up content, we discover that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to round up the Explorers and Strategists groups.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which adventurers will be where in the story’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on October 24.
